What Is Faith

What Is Faith?

written by on the topic of Bible Studies on August, 2008

Faith Is Simple Belief or Trust

The Old Testament word for faith is trust and occurs 152 times. The New Testament word for faith is believe and occurs 114 times. Faith is not merely an intellectual knowledge of God but rather both knowledge and an active belief or trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Biblical definition for faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” according to Hebrews 11:1. One of the greatest examples of faith is the Roman Centurion found in Matthew 8:5-13. His faith was so strong that he caused Jesus to marvel.

The Importance Of Faith

According to Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” From this verse one can clearly see that if we are not actively and continually applying faith in our lives, God is not pleased with us.

How Do We Increase Our Faith?

Romans 10:17 teaches the Christian that we must hear and study God’s Word in order to increase our faith. Matthew 17:20-21 demonstrates that powerful faith comes about through prayer and fasting. The earnest Christian that seeks to know God and have more of His power on his life must spend time with God in Bible study, prayer, and fasting.
