Check Your Heart

Check Your Heart

written by on the topic of Finances, Valentines on February, 2009

The emphasis in the month of February is found in the “heart” of the month on Valentines’ Day, February 14. All the stores carry candy boxes shaped like hearts, flower arrangements with heart-shaped cards, and greeting cards with pictures of hearts. All of these gifts are used to express to the special people in our lives that they have “all of our heart.” Here at North Valley Baptist Church we have what is called “I Love My Church Sunday.” It is on this day that we seek to express our heart for the Lord through faithfulness and giving.

February is a good month for each of us to check our spiritual heartbeat. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” This verse tells us that our heart will follow our investment. If we invest in the Lord’s work, our heart will be more apt to draw nigh to Him. Jesus told us that it is impossible to serve God and mammon. What we do with our money will have a major impact on our lives because our heart always follows. We must be careful not to measure our heart by the amount we give however. In reality, it is not the amount that measures the warmth of the heart, but rather the level of sacrifice. For example, the widow woman gave such a small amount; yet it revealed her sacrificial heart for the Lord.

If you find your heart has become somewhat cold toward the things of God, lay up your treasure in His work and watch your heart become warm. When Valentines’ Day rolls around this year, let’s remember to put our treasure not only in those we love, but also in the Lord’s work; our hearts will be sure to follow.
