Shake Well – Product Settles Naturally
This is a label that I read recently on an orange juice bottle. I couldn’t help but think that this is not only necessary for orange juice, but it is also necessary for Christians.
Naturally, we settle into a comfortable, complacent state of being. We like things to be easy. We enjoy the confines of our comfort zone. However, God wants us to grow, to stretch our limits, and to learn to trust Him. This can only happen when we
- Paul challenged Timothy to stir up the gift of God (II Timothy 1:6).
- Amos proclaimed a warning to those that were at ease in Zion (Amos 6:1).
- Zephaniah warned the people of Jerusalem against being “settled on their lees” (Zephaniah 1:12) and living carelessly (2:15).
The children of Israel had become comfortable and even prosperous in Egypt. This was not the place God had intended for them to stay. God allowed their circumstances to become harder so that they would be ready and willing to leave Egypt.
It is interesting what happened when affliction came – they actually became stronger (Exodus 1:12). We will never grow closer to God or become more like Him as long as we have smooth sailing. The trials, testings, sorrows and “shake-ups” in our lives are used to strengthen us.
By the way, the orange juice is much more desirable after it has been shaken up. The same is true of the Christian who has been shaken up.
